You are usually eligible to enroll in Medicare PART A when you turn 65. There is no Premiun charged if you have paid Medicare Taxes for 10 years in your working life.
It is usually not a good idea to only enroll in PART A , unless you have creditable coverage from a former employer or spouse for Prescription drugs. You usually need additional Medical Insurance (Part B), Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D). You may also need Medicare Supplemental Plans to cover co-insurance and limit the maximum out-of-pocket expenses.

PARTS A and B are Government administered programs. You have to purchase PART D from approved private insurers and there is a monthly premium for PART D plans. There are many many carriers providing different plans in your area and each plan has its own drug formulary. You have to ensure that the drugs you use are in the plans's formulary in the correct tier. Drug tiers determine how much you pay out-of-pocket and it is important to choose a plan that minimizes your out-of-pocket expenses. This is a viable option if you you are healthy and do not want to purchase Medical Supplemental Insurance. There are 10 plan types available in most states, and each plan is labeled with a different letter that corresponds with a certain level of basic benefits.

Medicare Advntage Plans (PART C) usually are administered by Private Insurance companies and replaced Medicare PARTS A and B.
